Strong Opening Weekend for the Hawks

The Hawks sent the JV squad to Helena for the Carroll College Invite on Friday. The full results for this race are at competitivetiming.com. Race coverage was in the Helenir.com.

On Saturday the top twelve from each squad traveled to Soda Springs, Idaho for the long held Cardinal Classic. There they met teams from Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho on the tough course at 5800 feet.

The girls JV squad opened the day with all 5 girls in the top 6 and an easy win with 18 points. Maddie Vilhauer took the win with a time of 21:19. All of the girls medaled. (Note that the timing system was off by one minute for this race and 1 minute should be added 😦 to each girls time from the JV girls race.)

After that strong showing the JV boys took the course and three of the boys were in the top twenty receiving medals for their performance on the high altitude course. The team placed 5th on the day.

The varsity boys were up next and nationally ranked Elijah Armstrong of Pocatello took the field out hard and fast. Both Chase Equal and Riley Collins medaled and the team placed 4th to the delight of Coach May.

The varsity girls closed out the day. Only six girls took the start line after the coaches decided to hold out All-State two miler Piper Meuwissen. Much to the delight of the crowd Bridget Creel took the lead on the long downhill and increased it to 17 seconds for her first high school invitational win. Sarah Foster and Kenneni Wiegand also finished in the top fifteen. The awards ceremony was quite tense as the team wasn’t sure of their overall placement. In the end they won with 94 points over Shelley, Idaho. NC
