Meet the Coaches
Coach May has hired two new coaches this year. The first one that I caught to get some background information from is Coach Cheryl Gourley.
She grew up in the New Mexico desert and recalls one of her first races being on toasty fall day in the Sandia Mountains. ‘I remember this early meet the best because one of my teammates actually passed out and was hallucinating that she saw me running through puddles of water throughout the course. It was such a dry, hot day; there was definitely no water around!’
No one in particular influenced her to start running. While walking home from middle school one day she saw the high school woman’s cross country team running past. After that moment she never had any doubts that she wanted to run, and has been ever since!
After 4 years in high school, college cross country, and many mountain endurance runs post college she hasn’t changed her mind.
She has been coming to Montana since 2008 to work on trail crews for the Forest Service. After finishing her MS in Exercise Science she decided to become a Bozeman resident in 2010 in order to work for the Nutrition Research Lab at MSU. Other sports she enjoys include African dance, Flamenco dance (maybe mostly watching), and rock climbing.
